Asher underwent his big surgery. Today, I went over the story with Isla and Asher while they looked at pictures from the photo book Pami made about the event. Neither child seems to have any memory of it, and for that I’m grateful! For more details, see this related blog post- https://keepingupwiththerosses.com/2013/05/01/ashers-1-year-surgi-versary/

Morning Story Time (video clip)
This happened spontaneously…. obviously, as I wouldn’t exactly set them up with some books on the kitchen counter in their pajamas. The matching bandaids happened seconds before the reading session. They’re buddies this morning. Notice Isla really studying the pages. The report from school is that she’s reading 3-letter words. I don’t pressure her at … Continue reading
Bribery
I’m staunchly opposed to using bribery, especially with sweets, to motivate children. Usually. Tomorrow is Isla’s party, but I’m assuming I’ll be too busy to capture random pictures, let alone stage a few. So I hatched a plan to get a few pictures of Isla today, calm before the storm style. Isla had other plans. … Continue reading
Celebration of Life
At Isla’s preschool, a Celebration of Life ceremony is held to mark the special occasion of the children’s birthdays. All of the children sit in a circle with a symbol for the sun in the center of the circle. The birthday child then holds a symbol for the planet Earth while walking around the circle, … Continue reading
Post Office (movie)
We have to drive a good bit to get to our mailbox and post office, so we only go about twice a week. But because we’re 1- living overseas and 2- heavy users of our Amazon Prime account, we pretty much always score at the post office whenever we do make the drive. Today, we … Continue reading
Oh yeah, Asher’s Birthday
It’s the age old paradox- on the one hand, time is flying by; on the other, it is eeking along at a snail’s pace. We’re about 2 months into Elliot’s deployment now, and somehow, Isla’s birthday is right around the corner. In the midst of planning her party and making her dress, and preparing for … Continue reading
Dommit
Isla- Mom, did you know “dommit” is “no” in Japanese? Me- umm, uhhh Isla- yeah, at preschool, Lochlain said “Dommit, Takuya!” and Takuya is Japanese and Lochlain was mad when he said it, so dommit means no in Japanese. Me- umm, uhhh People, where are the parenting books for these situations? This conversation was hours … Continue reading
Chopped (actually, buzzed)
I took Isla and Asher for haircuts about 2 months ago. It was a disaster. Asher left with half of a haircut (literally, 1/2 of his head). Isla, after witnessing poor Asher’s ordeal, refused any haircut at all. I made a mental note to just let their hair go, until we visit the States this … Continue reading
