We went to a little splash park today just for a little while. It was during the day, I know, but the stars must have aligned, or maybe something with the upcoming summer solstice, I don’t know. Isla and Asher were inseparable buddies. For the first 10 minutes or so, they just ran around like … Continue reading

Isla, lately.
Isla continues to thrive in her world of imagination and art. For example, she recently pretended every single night of at least a month to be my pet baby hyena. Yes, hyena. She wove an increasingly elaborate storyline to go along with this. She starts and finishes her days with coloring, and prefers to use … Continue reading
Asher, lately.
He loves to “do dishes” at the real kitchen sink, and “cook linner” at the toy kitchen. He continues to display a high emotional quotient, both for the emotions of others and for his own. “You okay?” “You need kiss?” “I sawwee (sorry).” And, “I SO mad,” for example. He rides his scooter through the … Continue reading
Underwater Swimming and Indoor Scooting
We spent this morning at the beach with a few of our dear friends. Asher played in the sand and at the water’s edge, while Isla preferred to be in the water floating around in a tube which she despised as an infant and now absolutely loves. After everybody was well adjusted to hanging out … Continue reading
For Elliot (video)
Because multiple other attempts to get this to Elliot haven’t worked, I’m going to try to post it here. Happy Father’s Day, Elliot!
Drawing
Out of nowhere, or so it seems, Isla has started drawing. Here, she drew her first (bearded?) “princess.” Ok, I know, at first glance it’s, um, interesting. But come on- ears with earrings, shoulder pads, a good twirling dress, hands with 5 fingers- this girl pays attention to details!
Cold and Wet
Our back yard is not very big. And there’s not much back there- a concrete slab, a big tree, a strange sand/mud area, some struggling grass, and the toys, grill and bench that we’ve added to the array. But seriously, it’s a jungle out there. We’re in the rainy season here in Okinawa, and every … Continue reading
Warm and Fuzzy
Just as all good ideas come to me lately, I found these in my Facebook feed. http://www.handsfreemama.com/2013/05/29/how-to-fill-up-a-child/ http://news.distractify.com/culture/less-than-10-kids/?v=1 I wanted to try elements from both, and after a particularly challenging day, I prepared the warm and fuzzy jars. I don’t usually go for this type of motivation, but desperate times call for… flexible parenting styles. … Continue reading
Jelly Jar Flowers
On our way to the beach, Isla spied some “beautiful flowers,” and just had to pick them. I keep a little jelly jar in the kitchen just for these bouquets. I know one day she’ll grow out of this, and roadside weeds will just be roadside weeds. For now, though, I cherish these hand-picked bouquets … Continue reading
Snacking
“Asher, please eat your snack at the table.”
